ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
Students create a series of three 2D and/or 3D design objects that comprise a “Campaign” about an urgent social issue. All elements of the campaign should visually cohere into an aesthetic that appropriately addresses a call to action about their topic— strategically using color, composition, typography, shape & form.
Campaigns are accompanied by a 300 word statement detailing student's research, design strategies and use of symbolism, iconography, indexical signs, and/or metaphor. This statement will include at least 3 verifiable statistics about the issue, a link to an organization that is working to combat the chosen issue, a bibliography, and a mock-up of the campaign in situ.
Campaigns be can a series of: Products / Product Packaging, Public art Interventions, Posters / Billboards, or Multiples (combination of posters, brochures, buttons, t-shirts etc.)
Questions to Consider:
- What is your call to action? How do you raise awareness AND compel viewers to get involved or take action?
- What is the most effective imagery related to your issue that will capture an audience's attention?
- What information do your viewers need to know in order to understand the issue you are trying to communicate?
- How can you make people care about an issue?
- What is the BEST location and scale for your campaign to be effective? (A series of ads in a magazine or billboards? A product that people use? An object in a public space? etc.)
