ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
Propose a piece of public art for the New York City MTA. Utilize the MTA website to see what locations already exist for artworks or advertisement space. Consider both traditional and subversive integrations into the subway rider experience.
Design an artwork specifically for the subway and its riders, then digitally mock up the artwork into a subway environment. Consider the make-up of the local community of riders, the historical, social, cultural and political context of the city, the significance of a particular station stop, or the identities of people using the transit system.
What message do you want to send to subway riders? Is there a particular message you want to send that is social/political? Is there a mood you would like to invoke?
Consider how the location of your design will impact how your image is experienced and how this relates to the aesthetic properties of your piece. Choose from one of the locations that already exist within the subway and utilize the expansive MTA website highlighting their public art program for inspiration. Consider both still and moving images for placement above seats, on video screens, digital billboards, interior and exterior car wraps, subway tiles, platforms, or any MTA related location of your choice.
